Michael Wayne Rosen was born on 7 May 1946 in Harrow, Middlesex, with roots in what is now Poland, Russia, and Romania and connections to the Arbeter Ring and the Bund. He is a son from Harold (1919-2008), His mother is Connie Rosen (1920-1976).

Michael Rosen attended state schools in Pinner and Harrow and Watford Grammar School for Boys.
